Communication – The Human Connection

We live in a world where communication is the backbone of our society. Business, politics, education, career, marriage and every other major part of our lives require communication.

As one of the great communicators of our time, Paul J Meyer puts it “Communication – the human connection – is the key to personal and career success.” I have always believed that the quality of our communication determines the quality of our life. Connecting and communicating with large groups of people will gain us confidence that overflows into every aspect of our life. I have experienced that communication allows us to influence decisions and motivate change. Public speaking is one of the most important and dreaded forms of communication.

In my opinion, the world really does open up to us when we know how to get our point across and speak with impact. The only thing you need to keep in mind is to be sincere and honest. Find your own voice, don’t try to sound like someone else. I have encountered a situation where I was clueless of how to answer in an interview. I overcame that difficult situation by being honest- so forget about eloquence and worry about being real. I recall what the interviewer told me by handing over my offer letter – “Don’t disguise who you are! People will never willingly follow someone they feel is inauthentic, we are impressed with your communication skills and confidence!” There I realized the importance of good communication skills. Let who you are, where you come from, and what you value come through in your communication.

Effective communication and effective leadership are closely intertwined. As a leader, you need to be a skilled communicator in countless relationships at the organizational level, in communities and groups, and sometimes on a global scale. A leader can inspire and encourage an individual by systematic and meaningful sharing of information by using excellent communication skills.

A leader must be confident enough, while communicating with others. People must believe the communications made by their leaders.

Lack of confidence while communicating can make team members uncomfortable, and unenthusiastic about their work. Confidence helps a team to work together to achieve desired goals.

Developing excellent communication skills is absolutely essential to effective leadership. A leader must be skillful in narrating stories and using anecdotes while communicating, which will definitely motivate other team members.

The benefits of good communication skills transcend beyond our career. I know this because the lessons I have learned through public speaking have helped me become more social, confident and engaging. So what are you waiting for? Now’s the time to take a conscious effort to advance your communication skills by joining a Toastmasters Club or even a speaking course. Next time when you are assigned to host a party, or to give a presentation at work, do not hesitate, JUST DO IT!
